2026 Legal Window Tint Percentages & State Compliance
Published June 2, 2026 · Deluxe Detail Studio
What VLT Actually Means
VLT — Visible Light Transmission — is the percentage of light that passes through your glass and film combined. A 5% 'limo tint' lets almost nothing through; a 70% ceramic film is nearly invisible. Every legal limit you'll ever encounter is expressed as a minimum VLT.
The Windows That Matter Most
Regulators care most about your front side windows and windshield, because officers and toll cameras need to see the driver. Most US states require front side windows to allow 25–70% VLT. Rear side windows and the back windshield are typically unrestricted for passenger vehicles — this is where dark privacy shades are almost always legal.
Windshield Rules
Full windshields can almost never be darkened. What is broadly permitted is a non-reflective visor strip along the top 4–6 inches (down to the AS-1 line etched in the glass). A clear 70% ceramic heat shield is legal in most jurisdictions because it doesn't meaningfully reduce visible light — check your local code to confirm.
Reflectivity & Colour Bans
Many states cap mirror-like reflectivity at 20–25%, and red, blue and amber films are frequently prohibited outright. Medical exemptions exist in most states for drivers with documented light sensitivity — they require a physician's certificate carried in the vehicle.
How We Keep You Compliant
Every Deluxe Detail installation is metered with a calibrated VLT reader before delivery, and we document the final readings on your warranty card. Tell us your state and vehicle type at booking and we'll recommend the darkest legal option for every window — so you never have to scrape film off at inspection time.
